Iceland Gull Bonanza January 2012

Iceland Gull Bonanza

1st Winter Iceland Gull

A huge influx of Iceland Gulls in January 2012 was typified by exceptional numbers on the Outer Hebrides, with at least 74 counted at Stornoway Harbour, Lewis on 24th January!  Particularly noticeable are the higher number of records from the coasts of Ireland, Wales and Western Scotland. Typically the UK wintering population would be 70-80 birds, but over 100 individuals have been recorded in Argyll alone.

During our boat trip with Sealife Adventures on Saturday 28th January 2012 we recorded four 1st Winter birds, with three together at Ard Luing (Grid Ref :- NM7506). Please see further photos below from that SNHG excursion.
